Emeritus Professor of History and Philosophy of Astronomy and Sciences (University of Athens)

Dr. Efstratios Theodossiou (Father's Name: Theodore) is an astronomer and from 2017 Emeritus professor of  History and Philosophy of Astronomy and Sciences at the University of Athens (since 2004). He was born in Athens, Greece on the 12th of March, 1949. He got his B.Sc. in Mathematics from the Aristotle University of Thessalonica, Greece (1972) and his Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the Physics Department of the University of Athens, Greece (1983).
He has worked as Laboratory Assistant, Lecturer and Assistant Professor at the Physics Department of the University of Athens. His scientific interests include History and Philosophy of Astronomy and Physical Sciences, Observational Astronomy and Astrophysics, Satellite Spectrophotometry of Be and Variable stars. He has published 92 scientific papers in refereed journals (17 in Astrophysics and 75 in History and Philosophy of Astronomy), 27 papers in the British Sundial Society Bulletin (BSSB) and the Journal of North American Sundial Society (NASS) and 203 papers in Conference Proceedings in Greece and abroad.
In addition, he has exhibited a rich writing work with more than thirty books in Physics and Astronomy, titled: On Stars and their myths-An Introduction in Uranography (1991), Measuring the Timeless-time-Time in Astronomy (1994), Astrology, Science or Religion? His book "The Cosmology of the Mind - An introduction in Cosmology" (2003) was awarded by the "Aronis' Prize" of the University of Athens (23 December, 2004). Also, his book "At the Years of Byzantium-The Byzantine scientists, physicians, physicists and astronomers" (2010) was awarded by the "Koskorozis' Prize" of the University of Athens (2013). In 2021 he wrote his magnus opus, a book of 832 pages titled: Astromythology-The astronomical de-symbolization of the myths of the Greeks and the Ancieent peoples in the astronomical eras Taurus, Aries and Pisces. For his total writing work he has been awarded by the Greek Writers' Association.
In addition, he has written six Teaching University books and notebooks and more than 340 scientific articles in newspapers and magazines. During all these years he has given more than four hundred lectures in Greek and foreign Universities, Institutes, Public and Private Schools, Scientific Associations, and other institutions
For five years, in association with the Assistant Professor E. Danezis, he has been creator, presenter and scientific supervisor of the scientific television series "The Universe I Loved", which already counts 110 episodes. He has been awarded the "Hellenic-American University prize" in the 1st International Science Film Festival, for this television series. In January-February 2020 he served as a scientific advisor and participant in the scientific show: "Counting the Stars: Astronomy in Ancient Greece", by COSMOTE TV which aired from Sunday 2 February 2020 and since then every Sunday at 21:00 in COSMOTE HISTORY HD. 
He has been awarded by the Hellenic Union of Physicists and by the Cyprian Union of Physicists for all of his scientific and educational activities. He is a member of the International Astronomical Union (IAU, Commission No. 41), the European Astronomical Union (E.A.S.), the Hellenic Astronomical Society (Hel.A.S, founding member, now ex-member), the Hellenic Union of Physicists, the Hellenic Union of Mathematics, the Foundation of "Preserving Language Heritage" and the Foundation of "Historical Studies of Ancient Greek Mathematics".  Finaly, he is a member of the Canadian Hellenic Congress' National Advisory Board  (Congrès hellénique canadien). He has been elected to the governing board of Hel.A.S.; he served as Treasurer (from 2002 to 2006). He was elected to the governing board of the Hellenic Physicists Society (2008-2011) and then President since 2011. He is married to Ekaterini Yfantis/Theodossiou and they have two daughters, Debbie and Vivian. Ηe retired in 2013 (December 28), at the age of 65, after 38 years of service. Member of the Emeritus professor's Union of the University of Athens (September 2017).
